Achievable lathe turning and milling tolerancesDepending on the production complexity, there aredifferences between normal, accurate and precisemanufacturing. The diagrams in figure 5, shows theachievable tolerances by turning and milling. Theachievable tolerances of the normal manufacturingare generally enough for mechanical engineeringtechnical parts. The accurate manufacturingincreases the machining costs of ca. 200 %. Theprecise manufacturing tolerances are to be appliedonly in exceptional cases, because they increase theprocessing costs of 800 % and they are, generally, not necessary. A continuous observance of the precisionmanufacturing tolerances, implies multipleintermediate annealing processes, relaxation storing, fully air-conditioned production equipment und theseoperations must be done only by expert operators. The ZEDEX ® high performance polymers are classifiedinto four tolerance categories. Materials of thecategory A, can be machined with more precisionthan the materials of the category D.MillingLathe turning1,00Tolerance categories1,00tolerance [mm]0,10accurate manufacturingnormal manufacturingAZX-324VMTZX-410V7TAtolerance [mm]0,10accurate manufacturingnormal manufacturing0,01precise manufacturing0,01precise manufacturing1 10 1001 10 100nominal dimension [mm]nominal dimension [mm]tolerance [mm]1,000,100,01normal manufacturingaccurate manufacturingprecise manufacturing1 10 100nominal dimension [mm]BZX-100MTZX-324ZX-324V1TZX-324V2TZX-324V11TZX-410ZX-530CD3ZX-530KF15ZX-750V5TZX-750V5KFBtolerance [mm]1,000,100,01normal manufacturingaccurate manufacturingprecise manufacturing1 10 100nominal dimension [mm]1,001,00tolerance [mm]normal manufacturingaccurate manufacturing0,10precise manufacturing0,01tolerance [mm]1 10 100nominal dimension [mm]1,00normal manufacturingaccurate manufacturing0,10precise manufacturing0,011 10 100CDZX-100KZX-530ZX-100EL55/63ZX-550ZX-550PVCDtolerance [mm]tolerance [mm]normal manufacturing0,10 accurate manufacturingprecise manufacturing0,011 10 100nominal dimension [mm]1,00normal manufacturingaccurate manufacturing0,10precise manufacturing0,011 10 100Figure 5: lathe turning and milling tolerancesnominal dimension [mm]nominal dimension [mm]32 ZEDEX ® basic types ZEDEX ® families Post heattreatmentMachiningShippingoverviewSterilizationChemicalresistance
Achievable surface roughnessThe achievable surface roughness depends on themachining and on the material properties as well. Formechanical engineering technical parts, generally thesimply achievable surface roughness, is suitable. Thetighter achievable surface roughness, obtainable withspecial procedures and equipments, should be usedonly in exceptional cases. From a tribological pointof view, a metal sliding partner surface roughnessshould be smoother than a polymer´s one. To reduce the friction and thewear, the sliding parts should both have the directionof lay of the cutting blade, parallel to the orientationof the sliding movement. The plastics surfaces roughnesshave normally got a sufficient Rz value of 10 μm,and a value of 6,3 μm for the high-quality surfaces.Tighter values only in special cases.Polishingeasily reachableZX-100KZX-100EL63ZX-100MTZX-324ZX-324V1TZX-324V2TZX-324V11TZX-324VMTZX-410ZX-410V7TZX-530ZX-530CD3ZX530EL3ZX-530KF15ZX-550ZX-550PVZX-750V5TZX-750V5KFMilling2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16Surface roughness Rz [μm]easily reachablePlaning / Sawing2 4 6 8 10Surface roughness Rz [μm]easily reachableZX-100KZX-100EL63ZX-100MTZX-324ZX-324V1TZX-324V2TZX-324V11TZX-324VMTZX-410ZX-410V7TZX-530ZX-530CD3ZX530EL3ZX-530KF15ZX-550ZX-550PVZX-750V5TZX-750V5KF4 6 8 10 12 14 16Surface roughness Rz [μm]Figure 6: roughness as a fuction of the machining processAll ZEDEX materialsPlaningSawing10 11 12 13 14 15 16Surface roughnessRz [μm]ZEDEX ® basic types ZEDEX ® families Post heattreatmentMachiningShippingoverviewSterilizationChemicalresistance33
