Chapter 4 Operating the <strong>Modulator</strong>Underst<strong>and</strong> the Boot ProcessThis section describes the boot process <strong>and</strong> lists examples of the screens that appearduring a normal boot process. The Bootstrap (BOOTP) protocol is used to initialize<strong>and</strong> to acquire the following configuration information: IP address Address mask Location of default gateway Addresses of important servers Name <strong>and</strong> location of software download file(s) from the network BOOTP serverNote: The G<strong>QAM</strong> downloads software using Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP),which is a simplified version of FTP.See Change the Boot Mode (on page 65) for a description of the boot modes available<strong>and</strong> instructions for changing the boot mode.See Troubleshooting Boot Screen Error Messages (on page 104) for troubleshootingbooting conditions.Boot Process1 The G<strong>QAM</strong> sends a BOOTP request to the DNCS.2 The DNCS responds to the BOOTP request, sending the IP address for theG<strong>QAM</strong>.3 The G<strong>QAM</strong> sends a TFTP request for the configuration file.Note: The configuration file (gqam.config) contains environment variables,download files, <strong>and</strong> server addresses.4 The DNCS sends the TFTP gqam.config file.5 If the files in the gqam.config file are different from those stored in the G<strong>QAM</strong>,then the G<strong>QAM</strong> requests the download files, which consist of the following:• Boot code for Host, NP1, NP2, <strong>and</strong> NP3• Application code for Host, NP1, NP2, <strong>and</strong> NP3• RF module code for RF Modules 1, 2, 3, <strong>and</strong> 4Initial Boot ScreensNote: The messages that appear on the front panel of the G<strong>QAM</strong> during the bootprocess are described in Initial Boot Screens (on page 62) <strong>and</strong> Code DownloadScreens (on page 63).The following illustrations show examples of the initial boot screens.62 78-745431-01 Rev E
