pulseTektronix releases first power analyzerMarking its entranceinto the power-analyzermarket, Tektronixdebuted the PA4000 poweranalyzer. Based on intellectualproperty (IP) gained from Tek’sagreement with Voltech, thenew power analyzer features aproprietary Spiral Shunt design, which includes dual internalspiral shunts in each modulefor stable measurements frommicroamps to high-currentmotor drives.DILBERT By Scott AdamsBasic voltage and currentaccuracy is specified at0.04%, with crest factors up to10. The PA4000 offers a voltageinput range up to 1000V RMS,2000V peak. Its dual internalcurrent shunts include a 20ARMS shunt for current up to30A RMS, 200A peak. For lowcurrentdevices, each channelalso includes a 1A RMS shunt. The shunts help keep voltageand current phase aligned duringmeasurements. Sensingcurrent accurately is challenging, and the IP in the instrumentas well as high-resolution 14-bitADCs make this possible. Theunit measures up to the 100thharmonic.Available with one to fourinputs, the power analyzeris modular, so it can be configuredin multiple ways. Forinstance, designers workingon single-phase devicesmight order the PA4000 withThe PA4000 power analyzer from Tektronix is equipped with four channels.two modules. Those workingon three-phase devices wouldlikely want all four channels. In terms of analysis, the unit isequipped with USB, LAN, andRS-232 interfaces standard.(GPIB is optional.) PWRVIEWPC software is included. Application-specificbuilt-in automatictest modes include PWMmotor drive mode (which setsfilters and timing for testingpulse-width modulated motordrive outputs), standby currenttest (which configures measurementtiming to perform standbycurrent measurements), electronicballast test (which synchronizesmeasurements forhighly modulated electronic ballastwaveforms), and integratormode (which sets the analyzerfor energy-consumption measurements). In addition, designerscan log their measurementdata to a flash drive using afront-panel USB port. PC softwarefor data download, analysis, andapplication-specifictesting is availableas a free download. For current measurementsabove30A RMS, Tektronixrecommendsthe CT-S, CT-M, orCL series of currenttransducers.Pricing for a onechannelPA4000is $10,500; two-,three-, and four-channel versionsare priced at $13,400,$16,200, and $18,900, respectively. Most features are standard, but there are two options:the GPIB interface and aninternal 15V power supply (forsensors above 30A). The unitcomes with a three-year warranty. The power analyzers areavailable now worldwide.—by Janine Love▷Tektronix, www.tek.comIC ProvIdesreAl-TImeIndoor-loCATIonInformATIonTargeting real-time locationsystems and wireless sensornetworks, BlinkSight’ssingle-chip transceiveremploys ultralow-powerimpulse-radio technologydeveloped by Imec and theHolst Centre to provide real-time3-D location informationthat is accurate towithin 10 cm.
