WRF-NMM. Indication of the options that have been tested, as well as the level of thetesting, is included in the discussion below. It is recommended that the same physics be used in all grids (coarsest and nests). Theonly exception is that the cumulus parameterization may be activated on coarser gridsand turned off on finer grids.Microphysics (mp_physics)a. Kessler scheme: A warm-rain (i.e. no ice) scheme used commonly in idealizedcloud modeling studies (mp_physics = 1).b. Lin et al. scheme: A sophisticated scheme that has ice, snow and graupel processes, suitable for real-data high-resolution simulations (2).c. WRF Single-Moment 3-class scheme: A simple efficient scheme with ice and snowprocesses suitable for mesoscale grid sizes (3).d. WRF Single-Moment 5-class scheme: A slightly more sophisticated version of (c)that allows for mixed-phase processes and super-cooled water (4). (This scheme hasbeen preliminarily tested for WRF-NMM.)e. Eta microphysics: The operational microphysics in NCEP models. A simpleefficient scheme with diagnostic mixed-phase processes (5). (This scheme is welltested for WRF-NMM, used operationally at NCEP.)f. Modified Eta microphysics: Similar to Eta microphysics (e), but modified to besuitable for the tropics (85). (This scheme is well tested and used operationally atNCEP for HWRF.) New in Version 3.2.g. WRF Single-Moment 6-class scheme: A scheme with ice, snow and graupelprocesses suitable for high-resolution simulations (6). (This scheme has beenpreliminarily tested for WRF-NMM.)h. Goddard microphysics scheme. A scheme with ice, snow and graupel processessuitable for high-resolution simulations (7).i. Milbrandt-Yau Double-Moment 7-class scheme (9). This scheme includes separatecategories for hail and graupel with double-moment cloud, rain, ice, snow, graupeland hail. New in Version 3.2.j. New Thompson et al. scheme: A new scheme with ice, snow and graupel processessuitable for high-resolution simulations (8). This adds rain number concentration andupdates the scheme from the one in Version 3.0. New in Version 3.1. (This schemehas been preliminarily tested for WRF-NMM.)WRF-NMM V3: User’s Guide 5-3
