The circumstances of Urnman'sown enlightenment are known to all Zen students. Ummon hadscarcely entered when Bokuju, perceiving the state of his mind, seizedhim by the shoulders and demanded: "Quick, say it, say it!" ButUmmon, not yet understanding, couldn't respond. To jolt Ummon'smind into Understanding, Bokuju suddenly shoved him out through thepartly opened door and slammed it on his leg, shouting: "You good-fo r­nothing !" With a cry of"Ouch!" Ummon, whose mind at that momentwas emptied of every thought, suddenly became enlightened.vajra: (lit., "diamond" or "adamantine"): the symbol of the highestspiritual power, which is compared with the gem of supreme value,the diamond, in whose purity and radiance other hues are reflectedwhile it remains colorless, and which can cut every other material,itself being cut by nothing.wu wei (]., mu-i): This controversial Taoist term has the literal meaningof "non-doing" or "non-striving" or "not making." It does not implyinaction or mere idling. We are to cease striving for the unreal thingswhich blind us to our true Self and instead strive to purify our mindsso we may come to the realization of our all-embracing Buddha-nature.Yama-raja (J., Emma-sama): in Buddhist and Hindu mythology, the Lotdor Judge of the Dead before whom all who die must come for judgment.By consulting his Mirror of Karma, wherein are reflected the good andevil deeds of the deceased, Yama-raj a strikes a balance, consigninghim either to a happy realm or, where his deeds have been preponderantlyevil, subjecting him to frightful tortures, of which swallowing a redhotiron ball is one.yang and yin (J., yo-in) : in Chinese cosmology, the principle of polarity,namely, heaven and earth, male and female, etc.
