IBM 1054 Paper Tape Reader and IBM 1055 Paper Tape PunchThe IBM 1054 Paper Tape Reader (Figure 62) andIBM 1055 Paper Tape Punch (Figure 63) providepaper tape input/output for the 1800 system. One ofeach unit may be attached to the system.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONPaper Tape ReaderThe 1054 operates under direct program control andreads one-inch, eight-channel paper tape at a maximumrate of 14.8 characters per second.Paper tape reading is initiated by an XIO control.This command loads a character into an input bufferand then moves the paper tape one character position.When the buffer has been loaded, an interrupt isinitiated to signal the program that a character isavailable for reading into core storage. The characteris read into core storage by a subsequent XIO read.The elapsed time from the execution of the XIOcontrol to the initiation of the interrupt is approximately15 ms. To maintain the 14.8 characters persecond operating speed of the 1054, the XIO readmust be given within 60 ms after the interrupt. Thistiming ensures that another XIO control can be executedto energize the reader clutch preparatory toreading the next character.Paper Tape PunchThe 1055 operates under direct program control andpunches one-inch, eight-channel paper tape at a maximumrate of 14.8 characters per second.Paper tape punching is initiated by an XIO write.This command starts the punch and causes the data inthe core storage location specified by the command tobe punched into the tape. Each core storage wordcontains one paper tape characterCharacter CodingThe 1054 reads input data into core storage in theform of an image of the punched holes. Figure 64shows the relationship between bits of the core storageword and channels of the tape. One paper tapecharacter is read into each addressed core storagelocation. Any code translation must be done byprogrammingPunching is similar. The 1055 punches papertape as an image of bit nositiona 0 through 7 of thecore storage word. Figure 64 related the bit positionsto the channels. One character is punched fromeach addressed core storage location.
