IBM 1442 Card Read PunchThe IBM 1442 Card Read Punch (Figure 67) providescard input/output for the 1800 system. A maximumof two 1442's (model 6 or 7) can be attached to thesystem.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONThe 1442, operating under data channel control,transports cards through the unit and accomplishesreading and punching as directed by the program.Cards are fed from a single supply hopper. Theyfirst pass the read station, then the punch station,as shown in Figure 68. Reading or punching is performedserially -- column by column.Maximum machine speeds are:Operation Model SpeedRead 6 300 cards per minute7 400 cards per minutePunch 6 80 columns per second7 160 columns per secondMaximum reading rates are attained only whensuccessive XIO initialize reads arrive early enoughto re-energize the read clutch before the clutch latchpoint is reached. To accomplish this arrival timing,successive XIO initialize reads must arrive within35 milliseconds (25 ms, model 7) after the operationcomplete interrupt is given by the 1442. If an XIOinitialize read does not arrive within this time, themaximum reading rate becomes 285 cards per minute(cpm) for model 6 and 375 cpm for model 7.Punching rates depend on the position of the cardwhen the last column is punched.
