This condition, data overrun,can occur with both input and output devices.Devices with the potential for data overrun providean indicator in their device status words to enablethe program to detect this condition.Data Channel AssignmentData channels are assigned specific priorities inorder to establish a sequence for servicing themwhen more than one data channel is attempting datatransfer. Data channel 1 has the highest priority,and the order of the priority follows the numericsequence of the data channel numbers, with datachannel 15 having the lowest priority.When a system is ordered, the various devicesand features desired are automatically assigned todata channels according to the intrinsic data ratesand operational characteristics of those devices andfeatures. The following is a listing of the devicesand features in the sequence that they are assignedto data channels. When changing data channelassignments from the normal priorities, the followingconsiderations are important:1. Assigning high intrinsic data rate devices suchas the selector channel, 2401/2402, and 1810to data channels with lower priorities than thosespecified in the preceding list may affect optimumperformance in overlapped operations and resultin random overrun conditions.2. If two data channels are assigned to an analogto-digitalconverter (random or comparator),analog input data channel adapter 2 must have ahigher priority than analog input data channeladapter 1.3. If the priority of the data channel assigned to adevice is lower than the priority of a data channelassigned to digital input or digital output,then the device may become locked out duringdata channel operations with large data tables.This problem can be partially alleviated by usingsmaller data tables.Two or more devices can share a data channel ifdesired, but concurrent operation of two devicessharing a data channel is not possible. When sharingdata channels programming considerations and physicalwiring limitations should be considered. IBMsystems programs assume that no devices share datachannels.
