System Configuration—Tuning PerformanceFreeBSD was designed and is being developed, with performance in mind. It hasproved to be a very high performance operating system for the network applicationsas well. There are millions of sites running FreeBSD as their hosting platform(according to Netcraft). Many users use FreeBSD as their gateway router andfirewall, while many others run their network services (for example, WWW, Mail,FTP, and so on) over FreeBSD.When you set up a new installation of FreeBSD on your server, the defaultconfiguration is designed to be conservative to offer more stability over varioushardware configurations. However, you may want to tweak a few parameters toget the most out of your powerful hardware and advanced FreeBSD features. Thischapter helps you to tweak many of the important parameters required to run a highperformance FreeBSD server. In this chapter, we will look at the following:• Tweaking Kernel variable using SYSCTL• Kernel• SMP• Disk• Network• The /etc/make.conf file• The /boot/loader.conf file.
