Network Services—LocalNetwork ServicesWhile FreeBSD offers a rock solid platform for running network services, it is notonly about Internet services. There are also some network services that are designedand being used mostly on the local area networks. Such services include DHCP, NFS,NIS, Printer Sharing, SMB (Windows File Sharing), and so on. There are also a fewprotocols that a system/network administrator have to deal with frequently, such asTFTP and SNMP.As you may have guessed already, some parts of the mentioned services are alreadyincluded in the core FreeBSD system. They do not need to be installed separately, while a few others should be installed from the ports system. This chapter introduces the mentioned services and a brief introduction of settingup these services in FreeBSD, as well as some tips to getting the most out of themquickly and effectively. In this chapter, we will look at the following:• Dynamic host configuration protocol• Trivial File Transfer Protocol• Network File System• Server Message Block/CIFS• Simple Network Management Protocol• Printing• Network Information System (yellow pages).
