Network Services—Internet ServersThere may also be some cases, where you do not have a system user entry for theemail addresses. You can specify virtual email addresses and map them to localsystem accounts. This can also enable a method called catchall that catches allemail addresses destined for a specific domain name, and delivers it to the user youhave specified:postmaster@example.comroot@example.com@example.compostmasterrootexampleuserThis example shows that emails sent to postmaster@example.com and root@example.com should be delivered to the equivalent local system users. However, any other emails destined for an address under the example.com domain should bedelivered to exampleuser, which is a local user (or could be an alias too).PostfixPostfix is a serious alternative to sendmail, which is widely being used as a fullfeaturedMTA. The major advantages that postfix has over sendmail are modularity(as compared to sendmail's monolithic design) and simplicity (as comparedto sendmail's complicated configuration). However, this is a matter of systemadministrator's choice to use whichever MTA, he or she wishes.Postfix is not available in the base system. Therefore the latest version should beinstalled from ports system under /usr/ports/mail/postfix.Once installed, postfix will completely replace the sendmail. It even replaces thesendmail binaries with its own binaries, to maintain compatibility with applicationsthat call sendmail binaries directly by updating the /etc/mail/mailer.conf file. After the postfix is installed, it should be activated by adding appropriate variablesin the rc.conf configuration file:postfix_enable="YES"And start the postfix by running its rc script:# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/postfix startNote:Make sure you have completely disabled sendmail beforeactivating postfix.[ 226 ]
