SCALABLE ENTERPRISE8> 'm:\expdata\order_2.dbf'9> db_file_name_convert="m:\expdata\","+DATA1/";In the Dell test, the RMAN convert command completed in31 minutes and 2 seconds. The same command was used on thetarget Red Hat Enterprise Linux system with the exception of thepaths to the data files. The path on the Linux server was /data/expdata/*.dbf.The next steps prepare the database for the insertion of thetablespaces. Administrators should create the user that owns thetablespaces as well as the directory object to be used by the DataPump import command for importing the metadata and pluggingin the tablespaces. In the Dell test, the following Data Pump import command wasused to plug in the tablespaces:impdp system/oracle dumpfile=expdat.dmpdirectory=data_pump_dirtransport_datafiles=+Data1/cust_1.dbf,+Data1/cust_2.dbf,+Data1/dsmisc.dbf,+Data1/indx_1.dbf,+Data1/indx_2,+Data1/order_1.dbf, +Data1/order_2.dbfFollowing the completion of the command, which usuallytakes less than a minute, a few more steps are required to finishthe migration. The default tablespace for the DS user should beUsing either Data Pumpor TransportableTablespaces can be aneffective way to migrate fromone platform to another.set to be the newly transportedds_misc tablespace;the sequences and data typesmust be created; and thenthe stored procedures shouldbe created to complete themigration. The precedingthree steps are completed byediting the database creationscripts and including onlythe needed sections. Finally, the tablespaces on the target system should be set to read/writewith an alter tablespace command for each tablespace. Thefollowing is an example of this command:Export File transfer Import Total timeData Pump 19 minutes 55 minutes and 1 hour and 2 hours and46 seconds 34 minutes 49 minutesTransportable 37 minutes and 1 hour and 31 minutes and 3 hoursTablespaces5 seconds 52 minutes 2 secondsFigure 5. Time required for Oracle Database 10ggmigration from a Sun Fire V440 server to a DellPowerEdge 6650 serverwork to start and complete the migration but also offers thepossibility of a very fast move. Figure 5 summarizes how long ittook the Dell test team to move the database from a Sun FireV440 server to a Dell PowerEdge 6650 server. In the Dell study, if ASM was not used on the source or targethost, then the time needed to use Transportable Tablespaceswould basically equal the time needed to convert and copy thedata files from one server to another. Even though ASM requiresthat the RMAN utility be used to move the data files in andout of ASM, the additional benefits that ASM provides in termsof ongoing data file management make it worth the extra stepassociated with using RMAN during the migration.Todd Muirhead is an engineering consultant on the Dell Technology Showcase team.
