CHEMICAL SPILLObserve the following procedures in the event of a chemical or radiation spill:1. <strong>Report</strong> immediately any spillage of a hazardous chemical or radioactive material bycalling 911, security <strong>and</strong>/or a member of the CMT.2. When reporting, be specific about the nature of the material involved <strong>and</strong> the exactlocation of the spill. The CMT will contact the necessary specialized authorities <strong>and</strong>medical personnel.3. Move away from the spill <strong>and</strong> help keep others away. Do not walk into or touch any ofthe spilled substance. Try not to inhale gases, fumes, <strong>and</strong> smoke.4. Those who may be contaminated by the spill should avoid contact with others, remain inthe vicinity, <strong>and</strong> give their names to campus police. As necessary, first aid <strong>and</strong> cleanupby specialized authorities should be started at once.5. The key person on site should vacate the affected area at once <strong>and</strong> seal it off to preventfurther contamination until the arrival of campus police <strong>and</strong> personnel fromEnvironmental Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Programs.6. If a building emergency exists, activate the building alarm.7. Evacuate the building immediately.8. Do not return to an evacuated building unless told to do so by an authorized official.24
