DEATHS- DEATH OF AN EMPLOYEE- Person aware of employee’s death immediately notifies appropriate DepartmentManager.- Department Manager, usually the supervisor of the deceased, notifies the correspondingExecutive Committee member.- The Executive Committee member notifies the Human Resources Manager, the SeniorDirector of Communications and the Campus President.- The Senior Director of Communications, in conjunction with the Human ResourcesManager, immediately prepares a memo to faculty, and staff regarding the employee’sdeath. In some instances, the memo may also be distributed to the other campuses.Depending upon the circumstances, a public statement may also be prepared.- If the deceased was a faculty member, the Vice President of Academic Affairs attendseach of the classes taught to notify students of the instructor’s death.- The employee’s Department Manager deactivates the voicemail and e-mail of thedeceased.- The Department Manager or the Human Resources Manager removes companyproperty from the deceased employee’s work station.- The Human Resources Manager notifies insurance plans, gathers information for thefamily of the deceased including life insurance, retirement plan beneficiary, anddistribution process.- The President’s office sends flowers or “in lieu of” to the family.- The employee’ supervisor and Human Resources Manager determine theappropriateness of a campus memorial service.- Counseling through the Wellness Corporation will be made available for counseling staffand students.- If the death is sudden, or the result of violence or suicide, group debriefings may beappropriate. Student Services, in conjunction with Wellness Corporation, can makearrangements for these meetings.28
