SUBSTANCE ABUSEUnder the InfluenceCrisis: A person is acting drunk, high, or impaired while on campus property or at acampus-sponsored event.- In all cases an assumption should not be made about the reason for the condition. Theperson in authority observing the situation needs to gather as much information aspossible <strong>and</strong> should address any concern about observable behavior.- If the nature of the impairment is unknown, the Director of Student Services should becontacted to determine the problem <strong>and</strong> to ensure the individual’s well being (in the caseof an employee, Human Resources will h<strong>and</strong>le).- Someone impaired or acting under the influence of substances should not be permittedto stay in the building. They should be asked to leave by the department manager,Human Resources Manager or other member of the Executive Committee. If theindividual is cooperative but appears potentially dangerous to him/herself or others dueto the impairment contact the Director of Student Services or the Human ResourcesManager. The Director of Student Services or the Human Resources Manager will callsomeone (family, roommate, friend, etc.) to escort him or her home or call a taxi, if noone is available. If the individual is uncooperative, contact the police.- The witnessing staff or faculty member will complete the Incident <strong>Report</strong> Form in asmuch detail as possible <strong>and</strong> submit copies to their Department Manager <strong>and</strong> to theDirector of Student Services. The Department Manager <strong>and</strong> Director of Student Serviceswill determine whom else needs to be involved to h<strong>and</strong>le the problem based on thenature of the situation.- The Director of Student Services will take disciplinary action if the incident involved astudent. If an employee, the appropriate Department Manager or Human ResourcesManager will take action.Long Term/Preventative:- Ongoing training for staff, faculty, <strong>and</strong> students is available about <strong>Argosy</strong> <strong>University</strong>’sDrug-Free environment policy <strong>and</strong> how to h<strong>and</strong>le situations, consequences orinfractions.- Ongoing awareness programs are available about substance abuse issues particular tocollege students.- Wellness Corporation may serve as a strong resource for many materials <strong>and</strong> individualsupport.47
