Objective of the study The specific objective of the present study is � To analyze the socio economic background of the selected sample women labourers in Sattur Taluk of Virudhunagar District of Tamil Nadu. Data analysis and Discussions This place is devoted to analyze and discuss the Primary data collected from the various women respondents in the study chosen for the Present Study. Today, economic independence is considered to be the Prime basis for improving the status of women in India. It is generally agreed that availability of credit to women would result in reducing their dependency, enhancing their social and economic activities as well as empowering them to assert more in the household decisions. In India women cannot be viewed as a homogenous group as the society is stratified on the basis of class, caste and religion. It has been observed that the position of women and their demand for bank credit remain tied to class, caste and religions affiliations. In order to grasp the nature of these causal relationships, it is imperative to understand the socio-economic characteristics of women labourer’s in Match Industries. This work attempts to analyze the major socio-economic variables of the women labourers. For this, the analysis of the present section has been classified under the heads namely; i) Socio-economic characteristics of the women labourers. ii) Family characteristics of the respondents iii) Relationship between family characteristics and income of the respondents Socio-Economic Characteristics of Women Labourers This section attempts to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the women labourers. Table 1.1 presents the distribution of the sample women labourers according to their age.

It is found from Table 1.1 that of the 500 women labourers, 176 (35.20 per cent) women labourers fall under the age group of below 25 years, followed by 162 (32.40 per cent) between 25-30 years, 85 (17.00 per cent) between 30-35 years, 64 (12.80 per cent) of 35-40 years and remaining 13 (2.60 per cent) fall under the age group of 40 years and above respectively. It is concluded from the analysis that more than 65 per cent of the women labourers belong to the age group of below 30 years in the study area. The Table 1.2 shows the educational qualification of the sample women labourers in match industry. Of the 500 sample respondents, 364 (72.80 per cent) of women labourers have upto Primary level of education followed by 64 (12.80 per cent) and 49 (9.80 per cent) of them
