uncertainties that plagued the African American community in the 1960s and1970s and remain
problematic even today. The play deals with the concepts of the “American Dream”—
specifically what that dreams means for a black family living in South Side Chicago. The play
had a profound cultural impact, as African Americans felt validated by Hansberry’s thorough
exploration of the black experience. Indeed, Hansberry shattered the barrier between African-
American culture and American Theater.
