Sexploitation - which reversed the traditional white and black roles. 3 Young productionexecutives encouraged the equally young independent directors, who no longer had toworry about the Production Code, and who had different interests and new visions.4 Theycreated, for a few years, the 'Hollywood Renaissance.' 5 With the Civil War apparentlyabandoned by Hollywood, television - now the main medium of popular culture - took overand began to produce films, documentaries and miniseries.It was not the centennial celebrations that returned Hollywood to the Civil War but thechange in the attitude of the Kennedy administration towards the issue of civil rights underthe pressure exerted by the Civil Rights Movement. Kennedy's policy had been to resolvethe issue of civil rights through a minimum of legislation, executive orders, action throughthe federal courts and an increasingly productive economy, whilst he attended to the moreimportant issue of containing communism abroad. 6 The Civil Rights Movement howeverpersisted in claiming its rights through non-violent direct action, which sought to createsituations which would force local white communities that had 'constantly refused tonegotiate [to] confront the issue.' The policy was not to provoke violent reaction, althoughit was accepted that this would probably be the response, but to expose Southern violenceto the world. This was particularly successful at Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963,where the apparent violence of the police, filmed by television, revealed the true nature ofSouthern segregation. 7 Kennedy's response was to make civil rights a 'moral issue' and tolegislate. For the first time since the 1870s a federal government was fully committed tooimplementing equality and had the backing of public opinion. The national agenda hadbeen set.The Civil Rights Movement had managed to maintain the moral high ground through itspolicy of non-violent direct action and through Martin Luther King Jr.'s marriage of theAmerican creed with strong Christian beliefs. 9 But it was not just about moral clarity andidealism, until 1965 the Civil Rights Movement was able to balance this with politicaleffectiveness. 10 The March on Washington in August 1963 was inter-racial and interdenominationaland demonstrated to the world that the Civil Rights Movement was'strong, united, determined and responsible.' 11 For the first time since the blacklist, liberalHollywood stars felt able to demonstrate their support for a liberal cause without being117
