Inf<strong>of</strong>ish website : PNG: Tuna exports to increase by 119%<strong>The</strong> National Fisheries Authority (NFA)<strong>of</strong> Papua New Guinea is projecting a119% rise in fish exports to the European market this year.Fish exports made up <strong>of</strong> tuna loins and canned products from four fishingcompanies fetched US$582,800 (K1.8 million) in export revenue in 2004 andthis figure is estimated to increase to US$7.5 million (K23.4 million) this year.<strong>The</strong> four companies, which obtained EU Accreditation after attending theEuropean Seafood Exposition in May 2004, are Maps Tuna Ltd, Ailand SeafoodLtd, RD Tuna Canners and Equatorial Marine Resources.Statistics from NFA show that volume <strong>of</strong> exports from Maps Tuna, EquatorialMarine and Ailand Seafood in 2004 totaled 102 tons. Figures from RD TunaCanners were not made available. Maps Tuna's export volume for this year isestimated at 86 tons, Ailand Seafood, 36 tons and Equatorial Marine, 54 tons.RD Tunas export forecast was not made available due to itsconfidentiality.In preparation for the coming annual European Seafood Exposition nextmonth, NFA acting managing director, Sylvester Pokajam said they areanticipating that total value <strong>of</strong> exports may exceed US$7 million after the2005 exposition.<strong>The</strong> ESE is held annually in Brussels, Belgium and is acclaimed to be thebiggest seafood exhibition, providing exhibitors and seafood industry theopportunity to attract the focused buying powers <strong>of</strong> the world seafoodmarket.<strong>The</strong> 2004 seafood exposition was PNGs first to attend to and eightcompanies that went there were involved in processing, long-line (tuna/loins),prawns, lobster and general fishing activities. <strong>The</strong>se companies were there tounderstand the EU market requirements and as a result improve marketaccess <strong>of</strong> PNG fishery products to the EU and other lucrative markets, said Mr.Pokajam.NFA and the EU project in Madang are preparing for this year's exposition andcompanies that intend to participate are Maps Tuna, Ailand Seafood, RD Tuna,Equatorial Marine Ltd, Delta Seafoods Ltd, South Seas Tuna Corp and FrabellePNG Ltd.To finance PNGs participation in the expo, the EU project will shoulder 30%<strong>of</strong> the cost while NFA will fill in the balance.2005-03-04183
