Serious Call of the GospelIt is a call to repentance ofs<strong>in</strong>s.This sets forth the proper relationship between God whocalls and men who receive the call. It is a relationship of theCreator and creatures who were created rational and moral. Assuch, when man falls <strong>in</strong>to s<strong>in</strong>, the demand to repent is legitimate.It is therefore a call to the proper duty of man. Here it must beemphasized that actual s<strong>in</strong>s must be dealt with to br<strong>in</strong>g aboutgenu<strong>in</strong>e conversion.This is what Heppe called Hthe vocatio universalis andnaturalis, " <strong>in</strong> contrast with Hvocatio specialist supernaturalis andevangelica."13 The latter is a call address<strong>in</strong>g the chosen of God.while the former. men <strong>in</strong> general.It is (I ctlll to faith toward tile Lord Jesus Christ.Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; no man can come tofellowship with God except by Him (John 14:6). Com<strong>in</strong>g to Christis a proper duty of fallen man. whether or not he has a personal<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> Him. Arm<strong>in</strong>ius challenged the propriety ofcall<strong>in</strong>g allmen after the Fall to faith <strong>in</strong> Christ. He wrote:I say and affirm, asseverate, profess and teach that Adam before hisfall had not power to believe <strong>in</strong> Christ because there was no needoffaith <strong>in</strong> Christ~ and therefore that God could not have demandedthis faith from him after his fall (to wit, by this right) because Adamhad crim<strong>in</strong>ally lost that power to believe ("Apology or Defence ...Aga<strong>in</strong>st Certa<strong>in</strong> Theological Articles:' 19 <strong>in</strong> The Writ<strong>in</strong>gs ofJamesArm<strong>in</strong>ius [1956], 1:333).14Turret<strong>in</strong> answered Arm·<strong>in</strong>ius' question very well that, <strong>in</strong>deed,Adam had that power to believe <strong>in</strong> Christ even before the Fall,should God have been pleased then to reveal the com<strong>in</strong>g Fall andredemption plan <strong>in</strong> Christ to him. ls The Fall made not only Adam13.
