Book Reviewswhich had invaded the thinkingand practice of evangelicalChristians, undermining the biblicalgospel ofthe grace ofGod"(p. vii). John Cheeseman is quickto point out that he believes"both in the absolute sovereigntyof God and in the clear scripturalcommands to preach thegospel" (p. viii). Thus the workis somewhat polemical, intendingto set forth the truth of sovereigngrace, pointing out someof the ways in which the doctrinesof grace are being compromised. At the same time, hewill maintain emphatically thecalling to do evangelism. This book has many goodand commendable aspects, andfor the most part, it was a delightto read. The author setsforth the sovereignty of God,and particularly in the salvationof man. Consider his descriptionofthe gospel. It isa proclamation ofdivine sovereigntyin mercy and judgment.... The gospel tells ofthe glorious triumph ofGod'slife-giving, free and savinggraceoverthe will ofman....This grace is that free andunmerited favour of God tosinners, by which God theFather loved us and hadmercy upon us; by which theNovember, 2001Lord Jesus Christ came toearth to die for aUf sins; andby which the Holy Spiritcalled us and drew us out ofdarkness into God's marvelouslight (pp. 7-8).Again he writes,The gospel we find in theBible is concerned with God.It seeks to glorify Him, andHim alone (pp. 8-9).Cheeselnan is emphaticabout the sovereignty of God.God is the "sovereign Creatorofall things" (p. 9). He affirmsthat God "'works all things accordingto the counsel of Hiswill' (Eph. I: 11), not out ofnecessity, but freely for His ownglory" and "to that perfect will, all things, and all men are subject"(p. 9). Also the sins ofmenare subject to that will and to theprovidence ofGod, though that'~in no way lessens man's responsibilityfor his sin" (p. 10).As to the state of naturalman, Cheeseman insists thatman is '"totally fallen" as a resultofAdam's fall (p. 21). "Everyman, woman and child borninto this world, with the exceptionofour Lord, is a slave to sin... and dead in sin, ... [and] sinsin all things" (p. 23). Not only83
