PETRI PELLIKKA AND KARI KAJUUTTI (ED)- Contribution to quicker and more cost-effective satellite technology of environmentalmonitoring in glacial areas and encouraging development of the spaceborne observationalsystem towards commercial applications.- Support of natural exploration, and environmental protection in alpine regions withreliable up-to-date hydrographic information in the form of regional hydrologicalreference database.- Filling certain gaps in the basic hydrological data network and improving links betweenresearch, application and education in water resources management.- Developing advanced techniques for public and commercial mapping of European glacialareas; demonstrating affordability for integrating national hybrid hydrological subnetworks.- Providing market and business drivers in the field of glacier monitoring, mapping andenvironmental protection in glacial and foreglacial zones.- Supporting the prospecting and exploitation of natural resources in alpine regions (freshwater and hydropower).- Assisting foreglacial zone management, conducting long-term economic projects andplanning regional conservation initiatives.- Monitoring of pollution in European glacial areas and ensuring a more comprehensiveprotection of the vulnerable alpine environment.- Marketing of new monitoring services in the region.- Provide a glacier and snow monitoring part for larger projects dealing with environmentalchanges, albedo etc.PublicityThe OMEGA webpages (http://omega.utu.fi) have been maintained and updated periodicallyduring the project time. It is also aimed to maintain the pages in the future by the Universityof Turku and disseminate results through the pages. The OMEGA system and dataincorporated into it is also open for public(http://gin4.itek.norut.no:8080/EUMap/OMEGA.jsp.).6 Dissemination and exploitation of the resultsScientific disseminationOMEGA has been disseminated through various media. The project homepages aremaintained at the University of Turku (http://OMEGA.utu.fi) and will be updated after theproject is over. Through the homepages, the project reports, publications and presentationshave been available for scientists, media and public. The other OMEGA homepagesmaintained by partners are listed in Appendix 2 of the Omega Final Report.Several scientific papers have been written during the project and published in peer-reviewedjournals and conference proceedings. Several papers are forthcoming after project finish.OMEGA has also been presented in several scientific conferences. Project coordinator hasbeen a popular speaker about glacier monitoring in Finland. In addition, number of Finnishnewspapers and magazines have written their own articles or published coordinator’s populararticles (in Finnish). The publications are presented in Section 2 and in paragraph 1.7.69
