112Joint Efforts at Indigenizing ChristianityIn the preceding chapters Ihave indicated the wayin which the Kukis have accepted the Christian faith.However,Christianity has not been able to penetrate thehearts and souls of many Kukis, because Kukis have receivedthe Gospel through the medium of an alien culture.This hasresulted in many Kuki Christians holding to only a superficialform of Christianity.This nominal Christianity hastended to dissolve the cultural unity of the Kuki people.This nominal faith has broken the Kuki's attachment to thetraditional and cultural heritage that previously bound thepeople together, but it has not been powerful enough initself to provide a solid base for a truly Christian senseof ethnic solidarity.Many Kukis are now beginning to realize that theirChristian faith needs to be strengthened and revitalized.In order to do this there is a dire need for contextualizingthe Christian faith in the context of the Kuki life andculture. The Kuki Christians' desire for a cultural unityneeds to be founded on the historic faith of the church.This unity would then serve as the ground for a powerfulexpression of the Christian faith and life in the context ofthe Kukiculture.Under these circumstances some of the Kuki Christianleaders have begun to see the need for more cooperativeefforts within the church.Then Kuki Christianity can takeon amore indigenous form.
