apathy is shown in the replacemerrtby new schools <strong>of</strong> seriously defectivestructures <strong>and</strong> in the reconstruction <strong>and</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> existingschools.' , .5The special problem relating to school accommodation in'Dublincontinues to engage the attention <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>, During theyear' under review grants to the amount <strong>of</strong> approximately £60,000were made for the' erection a.nd improvement <strong>of</strong> schools in the Co.Borough <strong>of</strong> Dublin, As the Housing Schemes which are intended to.relieve the congestion in the central portions <strong>of</strong> the City are beingrapidly pushed forward, the provision <strong>of</strong> schools for the children whichwill be reasonably convenient to their new homes is a formidable taskdem<strong>and</strong>ing strenuous effort on the part <strong>of</strong> all concerned. Schemes.for the provision <strong>of</strong> further new schools in the Co. Borough have beenapproved <strong>and</strong> the buildings are already in course <strong>of</strong> erection in severah, ,areas.Attention was drawn in the Annual <strong>Report</strong> for 1934-5 to the factthat new <strong>and</strong> improved plans had been sanctioned by the <strong>Department</strong>.Schools built <strong>and</strong> 'reconstructed in accordance with theseplans are in every respect superior to the type <strong>of</strong> building previouslyprovided. The plans conform to modern educational <strong>and</strong> publichealth requirements as regards classroom arrangements, ventilation,lighting, etc., <strong>and</strong> schools erected in accordance with these plans havereceived the warm approval <strong>of</strong> managers <strong>and</strong> others interested ineducation.Copies <strong>of</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>ard plans for three-roomed <strong>and</strong> six-roomedschools are inset.Ill.AMALGAMATION OF SCHOOLS.During the year under review 70 schools were amalgamated, resultingin the elimination <strong>of</strong> 35 schools as separate institutions. ,IV.VAN AND BOAT SERVICES AND GRANTS TOWARDS'! THEMAINTENANCE OF ISLAND CHILDREN ON THE MAINLAND.As explained in previous annual reports grants are made by this<strong>Department</strong> towards the cost <strong>of</strong> the conveyance <strong>of</strong> children 'toschool :-(a) by means <strong>of</strong> van services, under Rule 30 (2) <strong>of</strong> the Rules aridRegulations for National Schools, in areas in which the childrenreside far from school. The average- number <strong>of</strong> eligiblechildren conveyed by schemes under thi-s rule must; not, beless than 7. .(b) by means <strong>of</strong> boat services from isl<strong>and</strong>s where the number <strong>of</strong>children available is too small to maintain schools.In addition as indicated in the report for 1934~35,a:'specialschemefor the conveyance to school <strong>of</strong> Protestant children- in isolated areas,
