to give it in order to get rid of the oppression of a cruel one, orto avoid a disgusting situation. But accepting this would beharâm, too. Everybody should see their own defects, andshould every hour think of the faults which they have committedtowards Allahu ta’âlâ. They should always bear in mind thatAllahu ta’âlâ does not hurry in punishing them, nor does He cutoff their sustenance. The words of command from our parents,or from the government, compatible with sharî’a, must beobeyed, but the ones incompatible with sharî’a should not beresisted against so that we should not cause fitna. [See the123rd letter in the second volume of the book Maktûbât-iMa’thûmiyya.]After correcting the belief and doing the commands of fiqh,we should spend all our time remembering Allâhu ta’âlâ. Weshould continue remembering, mentioning Allâhu ta’âlâ as thegreat men of religion taught. We should feel hostility towards allthe things that will prevent our heart from remembering Allâhuta’âlâ. The more you adhere to the Sharî’at, the more deliciousit will be to remember Him. As indolence, laziness increase inobeying the Sharî’at, that flavour will gradually decrease, beingthoroughly gone at last. What should I write more than what Ihave written already? It will be enough for the reasonable one.We should not fall into the traps of the enemies of Islam and weshould not believe their lies and slanders.TRANSLATION of 110th LETTERThe hundred and tenth letter of the second volume, whichMuhammad Ma’thûm ‘rahmatullâhi aleyh’ wrote to one of hisdisciples, translates (into English) as follows: You should avoidtalking with a person holding a heretical belief and keeping anaberrant conduct in his religious practices and should bewarethe company of holders of bid’at. Yahyâ bin Mu’âdh Râdîpassed away in 258 [A.D. 872]. He warns: “Do not go intosohbat with three categories of people: Those scholars who areunaware; those hâfizes who think of worldly advantages; thoseshaikhs who are unlearned in Islam.” If the words, actions andbehaviours of a person passing as a shaikh do not conform withthe Sharî’at, keep as far away from him as you can! In fact, fleefrom the town or village wherein he lives! He is a covert, slythief. He will steal your faith and belief. He will lure you into theenemy’s trap. Even if he displays wonders and miracles and- 313 -
