next world and works for both,” and the hadîth, “Allâhuta’âlâ does not excuse incapacity, slackness. You shouldutilize your brains and intellect! Even if the difficulty of thejob seems to overcome you, you should keep on working,saying, ‘Allâhu ta’âlâ’s help is sufficient for me!’ ” are theevidences for this fact. The hadîth, “Tether your camel andput your trust in Allâhu ta’âlâ!” openly declares that it isnecessary both to have tawakkul and to work. Muslim scholarshave told and written these commands of Islam in books inevery country in every century.Tawakkul does not mean not to work and become lazy.Tawakkul is done for beginning a job and accomplishing the jobbegun. It helps to remove the fear of failing in a difficult job. Theproof of this is the âyat, “When you begin any work, havetawakkul in Allâhu ta’âlâ, trust in Him!” This âyat points outthat, besides tawakkul, not only labour but also determination,which is above labour, is necessary. Then every Muslim shouldwork, be determined and then trust in Allah.Religion reformers say that man should trust in himself, andMuslims say that he must put his trust in Allah only. Becausethe enemies of Islam do not believe in tawakkul and forreplacing the power and courage granted by tawakkul, they arecompelled to meet this need with the word self-reliance. It isseen that tawakkul is not unnecessary for Muslims. Some beingto be trusted in is necessary.27 - The reformer says:“Muslims believe that their sustenance has been determinedin eternity. They think that Allah the Most Generous will meettheir needs. Like an old carriage that may break into pieces atany moment on the road, they drag on along the road of meansof subsistence which would be shown to them by some chanceevent. They do not think that they may increase their earningsby working. They do not regard it necessary to work. This is theeffect of the religion in their sitting lazily and resignedly.“A free person having power of will believes that he himselfhas some power capable of doing. This self-reliance gives manthe strength of struggle for life. As he struggles, as thehardships obstructing his purpose increase, he feels strongerand wishful to fight more with the increased fire of his shockedpride. He is sure that he will win at last. Nothing can resistagainst this confidence, this belief. If we want to live, let’s form- 38 -
