Over the years, he amassed a museum-worthycollection. To showcase his treasures, he built TuguMalang, his first boutique museum hotel, on Java in1989. Three other Tugu hotels, on east Java, Bali, andthen Lombok followed.Take the time to view these treasures as they whispertales of Balinese royalty, ancient kingdoms, eternallove, and Indonesian legends. Indeed, at Tugu Bali, wefelt like we had walked into a living history book on Indonesianart and culture. Ask for a tour — Lucienne, thefounder’s daughter, charmed us with her recollections oflovingly exploring antique shops with her dad while herteenage friends spent their time on less soulful pursuits.One crimson-themed villa, which you can visitwhen it’s not occupied, is dedicated to the passionatelove story between Belgian painter Le Mayeur (whocame to Bali in 1932) and the model of his paintings,Balinese dancer Ni Pollok; it showcases the artist’soriginal carved furniture.The piece that started Setjadibrata on his life-long missionof cultural preservation is displayed in Tugu Bali’shotel lobby — a 16th-century stone bowl from which ancientpriests sprinkled holy water on sick villagers.And one object that really caught our eyes was a dramatic,five-metre-high Garuda (sun bird king), carvedfrom a 120-year-old tree, towering above a dance stagein the lobby. Lucienne told us she literally stumbledover the statue at a village. Carved by an Indonesianmaster carver, it had been left outside as too massivefor any home, and had sunk and almost disappearedinto the ground. (In its current central location, it’slikely it also caught the attention of super-model KateMoss and Brazilian pop star Bebel Gilberto, who havebeen spotted at Tugu Bali.)72
