Altenau (with District of Torfhaus)
With the expression "Altenau... da, wo der Pfeffer wächst!", a cheeky
German pun, and an interesting programme of organised events, this
formerly free mining town was awarded a prize in a statewide competition.
Since then "der Würzel" (a fi gure planted with herbs) has been
a popular item in Altenau.
Europe's largest herb park with spice gallery and pagoda of
spices, the private gardens along the "Altenau Herb Trail" and the
mountain meadows show the importance of herbs and spices for this
mining town.
A health spa with a therapeutic climate, it is a central starting
point for hikes of varying degrees of diffi culty, such as the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg
Hiking Trail. From the District of Torfhaus, which is located in
the Harz Mountains National Park, it is only about 8 km on the Goethe
Trail up through unspoilt nature to the summit of Mount Brocken.
In Altenau mountain bike lovers get on the over 1,800 km of marked
routes of the Volksbank-Arena Harz.
With its thermal saltwater bath and sauna landscape spa, bons vivants
fi nd the KRISTALL "Heißer Brocken" sauna inviting to relax and
pamper themselves.
Other leisure activities available in Altenau include the DSV Nordic
Aktiv Walking Centre, cross-country skiing trails, ski and toboggan
lifts and the Waldschwimmbad Okerteich [Okerteich Forest
Setting Swimming Pool].
And genuine Altenau beers are to be had from the only private
brewery in the Upper Harz Mountains.
