EFFECT OF ORGANIC FERTILISERS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF TOMATO variation among different treatments. The highest mean leaf area (1178.6 cm 2 ) was found in T 6 (Inorganic N + Bio Phos + Bio Potash + Bio Zinc) where organic fertilizers were applied for P, K and Zn. There was an increase of 73% in leaf area when combination of organic and inorganic sources were used as in T 10 (Aishwarya + Inorganics NPK) when compared to only application of inorganic NPK (T 2 ) and it was 8.9% when compared to T 9 (Aishwarya alone). There was 7.2% increase in leaf area when combination of organic fertilizers and inorganics, T 8 (New Suryamin + Inorganic NPK) were used instead of organics alone, T 7 (New Suryamin). Organic fertilizers alone or in combination with inorganics proved superior to inorganic fertilizers for the reason that organic fertilizers are multi nutrient sources which supply different nutrients as shown in Table 1. Addition of fertilizers either organic or inorganic increased chlorophyll content also significantly. Similar results were reported by Anuradha (2010) on greengram in a pot culture study. Yield in terms of fruit weight varied from 67.7 to 212 g plant -1 among different treatments (Table 2). The highest fruit weight was obtained by the treatment wherein all nutrients were supplied through inorganic sources along with carbon rich Aishwarya (T 10 ) followed by T 6 (Inorganic N + Bio Phos + Bio Potash + Bio Zinc) and T 8 (New Suryamin + Inorganic NPK). Any organic source either alone or in combination with Inorganic NPK significantly increased yield over inorganic NPK. The treatment where only inorganic NPK (T 2 ) was used has recorded 162.4 g per plant -1 which was increased by 10.4 g (6.4%) by the addition of zinc sulphate in T 3 (Inorganic NPK and Zn) and a further increase by 18.8 g (10.8%) with replacing zinc sulphate by Bio zinc (T 5 ). An increase of 11.7 % of fruit was observed when inorganic P and K (T 2 - Inorganic NPK) were replaced by organic fertilisers T 4 (Inorganic N + Bio Phos + Bio Potash). Makinde (2007) reported that the multi nutrients content and 35.5 g kg -1 of organic carbon in organomineral fertilizer resulted in higher yield of 812 kg ha -1 of melons with 4 t ha -1 of organo mineral fertilizer compared to control which yielded 347 kg ha -1 . The superior performance of organic treated plants might be owing to improvement in physical, chemical and microbiological environment of soil favoring increased availability of plant nutrients (Hossain et al., 2009) which effect the translocation of sugars to the fruits and hence the weights. The lycopene content as influenced by different treatments is presented in Table 2 revealed the significant effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the lycopene content of tomato. The highest lycopene content (49 µg g -1 ) was observed in the treatment T 6 (Inorganic N + Bio Phos + Bio Potash + Bio Zinc), followed by T 10 (Aishwarya + Inorganic NPK). The study concludes the recommendation of the use of these organic fertilizers as a part of INM, either alone or along with inorganics owing to the beneficial effects observed on growth, yield and quality of tomato.
