ut we definitely wanted to portray him (Devlin) as
more of an example of what not to do. We didn’t
want to scare the kids- even with the first episode
where you are still getting to know the characters
and figure them out. Devlin is more of a silly Devlin
than an evil one, and we wanted to provide a really
good example of what not to do.
So he’s not a representative of Satan per se,
but he’s just a representative of maybe somebody
who’s a little bit worldly.
Tom: Yes, he’s really into distractions. You can
kind of equate the two, but we didn’t want to be
so frightening for any kid that they couldn’t watch
it. So that element is really hard to control and to
make a connection like that.
What message do you hope the children will
take away from watching Owlegories?
Tom: First and foremost, I want to make sure after
every episode that we end by sharing the gospel.
The kids are so young, and some of them are just
being introduced to the faith, to the Bible, and so
on.
The most important thing is that every element of
creation is talked about. We want to springboard
into the gospel. First and foremost, for us, is the
message of Christ’s salvation. We want children
to take away the message that God is the Creator
of all things… God created all the plants, all the
stars, and the same God loves this individual. I
think that’s an amazing thing!
Out of curiosity, do you plan on doing a segment
on creation according to Genesis for
Owlegories? In teaching my children about creation,
I have found that the tools out there have
been a bit over their head, or not quite accurate,
and they end up loosing the concept of how God
created the world.
Tom: We don’t have one scheduled right now, but
what’s great about Owlegories is that we can send
them into any place and time. We have talked
about it before, and thought that it would be great
to put them back in time to resolve certain situations,
or maybe they go back to creation in other
ways, but it’s certainly on our radar. However, we
don’t have any production plans right now.
What lead you to expand from an app to a television
series and memory verse segment?
Julie: Well, I was in a Bible Study four years
ago with my friend Amanda. I was able to meet
with her and found out that her husband was into
making faith-based films. When we created the
app years later, his name popped into my mind
and we reconnected with him.
He had always wanted to do some animated series
as well. So it was a really good God connection
from years ago and Bible study.
Tom: He had worked on an animated series for
Nickelodeon, but he had never moved to Hollywood.
He just stayed here and was either patched
in or commuted.
He was a solid believer, so we thought that it would
be fun to do an animated series. He was a large
reason why we turned it from an app to a television
series.
