ship a certain sound.” There’s
no certain way to worship. The
Bible says just to make a joyful
noise. There’s no specific style
or genre, so we said “no rules.”
They started coming up with all
these types of melodies.
One thing led to another and
we just started doing what was
in front of us. People started
hearing about what we were
doing and took an interest. They
started coming to this little city,
Modesto, to hear the band. We
didn’t think anything of it. We
thought we were just doing
something normal. So we continued
to write, and we put out
a self-titled album, Worth Dying
For, and a few other albums.
I think it was a couple of years,
maybe six or seven years in.
We were in our shuttle bus. We
were traveling all over. How he
described it, it’s like the sound
was sucked out of the bus, and
it’s like he heard God say, “You’re
going to start a church with this
band. And all of a sudden the
sound came back in, and specifically
one more time it happened
where the sound shut off. “In the
next five years, you’re going to
start a church with this band.”
Now he didn’t say anything to
me for a long time about this.
He was a little nervous about it.
It was a big deal—moving my life
to LA, starting a church. We’re
doing good. We’re comfortable
where we’re at. I eventually
came around. I wanted to hear
God for myself. I remember the
specific moment that God spoke
to me as well. I was watching
this documentary from this other
church. And all I saw were people’s
faces, people from every
walk of life, every background,
every culture, every race. And
I’m not an emotional person, but
something hit me and I felt the
power of God and I started falling.
I looked at my husband
and I said, “When are going to
do this, I’m ready to go do it.”
All he needed was for me to
hear. We took a team of about
25 people and we felt strongly
to go to Los Angeles because
it’s a place with all these upcoming
world changers, artists,
actors, producers, people that
are changing the world. It’s the
place to change culture. LA is
such a huge, impactful place
and we felt maybe we could
shift the people there. We left
everything. We left people. We
left our home. We had what we
needed to be comfortable but
God wanted us to move out of
our comfort zone. He resources
the call, but he doesn’t always
give you the resources before
the call, and that’s what I had to
learn. Do I wait for everything to
be lined up? No, we just have to
go and say I am going to believe,
have faith and trust God. We
didn’t have paychecks. We said
that maybe we would have to
live off savings. We had to find
a house. We had resistance,
but resistance doesn’t mean that
God’s not in it. I’ve found that if
anything, resistance means God
is in it because the enemy knows
the power of what’s inside of
you. And if it’s released, you can
give birth to it, it will impact the
world. There’s a lot of pressure,
and resistance, and opposition
and pushback with a dream or
vision. So if anything, that made
us go okay, we are about to birth
something great here, and so we
continued to push through any
obstacles.
Where did you get the name for
the church and the band?
We found a quote from A.W.
Tozer that says “A scared world
needs a fearless church.” I John
4:18 says: Perfect love casts
out fear. I think we would all
say there’s a need for a fearless
church in the world that we are
in, with such fear and such craziness.
Our world is just falling
apart at the seams. If you just
turn on the news for one minute,
you’ll see that. God says we can
release so much love that we can
raise fearless people. Fear won’t
win. Fear, when it speaks to me,
I won’t let fear win or destroy
me. I won’t let fear defeat me
anymore. It doesn’t mean that
we won’t have fear but that fear
won’t win when it comes.
We have loved on this city like
never before. We’ve tried to.
We come here for the dreamers
and those that have dreams that
have been crushed. We want
our church to be like a ‘dream
factory’ where you can come in
and find hope again. We say,
“God didn’t come to make bad
people good, He came to make
dead people live.” And that’s
what we tell people every week.
We want you to live.
We’re in a club called Exchange
LA and it’s actually a night club.
II think it’s so cool, because it
breaks the mold for what people
think church has to be. But we
are the church. Some people
think church has to be in a certain
building, and when we tell
them it’s in a club, we get more
people who might never set foot
in a church. People who were
dancing on Friday night for all
