you mean by “Rites of Passage”…
In essence, a rite of passage
is an invitation to something
greater than oneself. Unfortunately,
in our culture most teenagers
don’t feel like an adult until
they get their driver’s license or
lose their virginity. These are
horrible rites of passage. They
don’t invite the teenager to
something greater than himself/
herself, they invite the teenager
back to themselves. We wanted
to create a shared spiritual experience
for parents and their children
that honored that major
transition of each year while also
inviting them to faith and family.
What is an example of one of
the “Rites of Passage” that
you talk about in your book?
One of my favorites is the 2nd
grade rite of passage. That’s the
“Invitation to the Bible.” By this
point most 2nd graders are able
to read, and that means that
they are able to read the Bible
for themselves for the first time.
We honor this by encouraging
the parents to buy their 2nd
grader a Bible and have loved
ones mark their favorite verse
and write a note of encouragement.
Then the parents present
the Bible to the 2nd grader
along with explaining to them the
importance of the Bible in their
own lives.
What other ministries are you
both engaged in?
As I mentioned earlier, I run
ParentMinistry.net which helps
church build an excellent Parent
Ministry.
“I am the President of Home-
Word. Our core values are to
build – Strong Marriages – Confident
Parents – Empowered Kids
– Healthy Leaders. HomeWord
comes along side families and
church leaders to help families
succeed. We provide resources
connected to our families, seminars,
conferences, radio, podcast,
and articles.” Jim Burns,
