Staying On Course By Charlaine Martin Raising a family in our pluralistic society is like setting sail in a sea of turbulent waters, the undercurrents threaten to pull us down into its murky depths. We encounter people every day who insist all roads lead to God. There are those who pose challenging questions which forces us to dive into Scripture searching for a ready answer in defense of our faith in Christ. Some of the undertow is a quiet, subtle spirituality through friends, family, neighbors, and people in our churches. It slips in unannounced with its religious jargon, but it is slaps away at their minds and hearts, attempting to pull them farther away from God. What is it? It is a blur of Hinduism, Zen Buddhism, New Age Spirituality, and Universalism with the overarching view that all roads lead to God. What you believe is true. What I believe is true. Nevertheless, contradictions are conjured up in the spiritual stormy waters. It seems neutral, but it’s certainly not. You and your family can navigate your way safely through these rough waters, by equipping yourselves. Here are the tools you need to keep your family safely out of its grasp, while reaching others for Christ. Arrival on our Soil Hindu and Buddhist philosophies quietly entered through Hindu yogis, martial arts masters, and Buddhist monks. Then it stormed in through mainstream culture in the 1960s and 1970s through social unrest. The primary driver was dissatisfaction with the “establishment” challenging the traditional family, church, government through anti-war protesters, and civil unrest. Soldiers came home from the Vietnam and Korean wars bringing martial arts with them and their Asian brides. The West met the East. The Hippie movement with the psychedelic era ushered in the “make love, not war” mentality. The Beatles, a popular British rock group, brought their music on the scene with George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” skyrocketing to the top of the music charts.
