sunrise, at midday, and at sunset) to water <strong>in</strong> the forest (<strong>in</strong> order to bathe).<br />

VI. Duties to be performed<br />

various k<strong>in</strong>ds of pure food fit for ascetics, or with herbs, roots, and fruit.<br />

VI. 7 "Let him perform the Bali- offer<strong>in</strong>g with such food as he eats,<br />

which and give alms accord<strong>in</strong>g to his ability; let him honour those who<br />

come to his hermitage with alms consist<strong>in</strong>g of water, roots, and fruit.<br />

VI. 8 "Let him be always <strong>in</strong>dustrious <strong>in</strong> privately recit<strong>in</strong>g the Veda; let<br />

him be patient of hardships, friendly (towards all), of collected m<strong>in</strong>d, ever<br />

liberal and never a receiver of gifts, and compassionate towards all liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

creatures."<br />

VI. 9 " Let him offer, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the law, the Agnihotra with three<br />

sacred fires never omitt<strong>in</strong>g the new-moon and full-moon sacritices at the<br />

proper time." VI. 10 " Let him also offer the Nakshatreshti. the Agrayana,<br />

and the Katurmasya (sacrifices), as well as Turayana and likewise the<br />

Dakshavana. <strong>in</strong> due order."<br />

VI. 23 "In Summer let him expose himself to the heat of the five fires.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the ra<strong>in</strong>y season live under the open sky and <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter be dressed<br />

<strong>in</strong> wet clothes, (thus) gradually <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g (the rigour of) his austerities."<br />

VI. 24 " When he bathes at the three Savanas (sunrise midday and<br />

sunset), let him offer libations of water to the manes and the Gods and<br />
