that for wilfully kill<strong>in</strong>g a Brahmana and dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>e the Prayachitta is death Gautama 21, 7 says the same.<br />

"16. Explanation (by secretly performed Prayascittas) of the mortal s<strong>in</strong>s other than theft (of gold) and the s<strong>in</strong> of<br />

contact (with those guilty of Mahapatakas)." [Manu XI, 54 enumerates contact with those guilty of the four<br />

mahapataka as a fifth mahapataka. Gautama 24 and Vashishtha 25 prescribe secret prayascittas even for<br />

mahapatakas like Brahmahatya. This rule says that there are no secret prayascittas <strong>in</strong> Kali for Brahmahatya, or<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>e and for <strong>in</strong>cest. Vide Apararka p. 1212 for rules as to who was entitled to secret prayascittas.]<br />

"17. The act of offer<strong>in</strong>g with Mantras animal flesh to the bridegroom, the guest, and the pitrs." [Madhuparka<br />

was offered to honoured guests among whom the bridegroom was <strong>in</strong>cluded. Vide Gautama V. 25-35, Yaj. 1.<br />

109. The offer<strong>in</strong>g of flesh of various animals <strong>in</strong> Sraddha was supposed to conduce to the enjoyment of pitrs.<br />

Vide Yaj. 1. 258-260. Manu III. 123. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Asvalayana Grhyasutra 1. 24-26 Madhuparka could not be<br />

offered without flesh. Vide Vashishtha IV. 5-6.]<br />

Vashishtha 21.10 says 'four k<strong>in</strong>ds of' women viz. one who has <strong>in</strong>tercourse with a pupil or with the husband's<br />

teacher, or one who kills her husband or commits adultery with a man or degraded caste should be<br />

abandoned.Yaj. (III. 296-297) is aga<strong>in</strong>st and says that even such women should he kept near the house and<br />

given starv<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. Vide Atri V. 1-5.] "21.[ Kane's Kalivarjya pp. 8-12.] Kill<strong>in</strong>g oneself for the sake of<br />

another."<br />

[ The Smritis say that a man should run the risk ol life lor cows and Brahmanas: vide Manu XI. 79 and<br />

partaken of it from what was taken out lor oneself or food touched by such leav<strong>in</strong>g should not be eaten. Or this<br />

may mean 'giv<strong>in</strong>g to another the leav<strong>in</strong>gs of food ': some smriti.s permit giv<strong>in</strong>g Ucchista to Shudras and the like.<br />

23. Resolve to worship a particular idol for life (<strong>in</strong> return for payment) " [ Manu III. 152 makes a Brahmana<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g worship for money unfit lor <strong>in</strong>vitation <strong>in</strong> sraddha and 'devakrtya'.]<br />
