Austere Striv<strong>in</strong>g - 18<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>r, this occurred <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> gods after see<strong>in</strong>g me:<br />
‘The ascetic Gotama has died,’ 13<br />
this occurred <strong>to</strong> some gods:<br />
‘The ascetic Gotama has not died, he is dy<strong>in</strong>g,’<br />
this occurred <strong>to</strong> some gods:<br />
‘The ascetic Gotama has not died, he is not dy<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> ascetic Gotama<br />
is Worthy, it is <strong>in</strong> this way that <strong>the</strong> Worthy One lives.’<br />
Then I rejected those gods, say<strong>in</strong>g: “Why should I do that?”<br />
6. The Fast<strong>in</strong>g 14<br />
Then this occurred <strong>to</strong> me: ‘What if I were <strong>to</strong> take food little by little,<br />
measure by measure, whe<strong>the</strong>r it <strong>be</strong> mung <strong>be</strong>an soup, or vetch soup, or<br />
chick-pea soup, or pea soup?’<br />
Then I <strong>to</strong>ok food little by little, measure by measure, whe<strong>the</strong>r mung<br />
<strong>be</strong>an soup, or vetch soup, or chick-pea soup, or pea soup.<br />
Then, as I <strong>to</strong>ok food little by little, measure by measure, whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />
mung <strong>be</strong>an soup, or vetch soup, or chick-pea soup, or pea soup, this<br />
body <strong>be</strong>came excessively emaciated.<br />
Just like v<strong>in</strong>e knots or bamboo knots, so were my limbs both great<br />
and small through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />
Just like a camel’s foot, so did my but<strong>to</strong>cks <strong>be</strong>come through hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
so little food.<br />
Just like a twisted v<strong>in</strong>e, so did my backbone <strong>be</strong>come twisted through<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />
Just like an old hall, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>be</strong>am is rotten and broken, so<br />
did my ribs <strong>be</strong>came rotten and broken through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />
