The Awaken<strong>in</strong>g<br />
10. F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Right Path 19<br />
Then this occurred <strong>to</strong> me: ‘Those ascetics and brahm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past<br />
times who felt acute pa<strong>in</strong>, sharp, harsh, and bitter feel<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>re is<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>be</strong>yond or superior <strong>to</strong> this.<br />
Those ascetics and brahm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future times who will feel acute<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>, sharp, harsh, and bitter feel<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>be</strong>yond or<br />
superior <strong>to</strong> this.<br />
Those ascetics and brahm<strong>in</strong>s who now feel acute pa<strong>in</strong>, sharp, harsh,<br />
and bitter feel<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>re is noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>be</strong>yond or superior <strong>to</strong> this.<br />
But even by undergo<strong>in</strong>g this bitter austerity I did not atta<strong>in</strong> a state<br />
<strong>be</strong>yond ord<strong>in</strong>ary human <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>gs, a dist<strong>in</strong>ction of what is truly noble<br />
knowledge and <strong>in</strong>sight.<br />
I wonder is <strong>the</strong>re ano<strong>the</strong>r path <strong>to</strong> Awaken<strong>in</strong>g?’<br />
Then this occurred <strong>to</strong> me: ‘I recall that while my Sakyan Fa<strong>the</strong>r was<br />
at work, while I was sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cool of <strong>the</strong> shade of <strong>the</strong> Rose-<br />
Apple tree, quite secluded from sense desires, secluded from<br />
unwholesome th<strong>in</strong>gs, hav<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, reflection, and <strong>the</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
and rapture born of seclusion, I dwelt hav<strong>in</strong>g atta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> first<br />
absorption. I wonder if this is <strong>the</strong> path <strong>to</strong> Awaken<strong>in</strong>g?’<br />
Then <strong>to</strong> me <strong>in</strong> conformity with that recollection I <strong>be</strong>came conscious:<br />
‘This is <strong>the</strong> path <strong>to</strong> Awaken<strong>in</strong>g.’<br />
Then this occurred <strong>to</strong> me: ‘Why am I afraid of that pleasure? That<br />
pleasure is one th<strong>in</strong>g, and unwholesome sensual pleasures are<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>g.’<br />
