Austere Striv<strong>in</strong>g - 29<br />

sk<strong>in</strong> of my s<strong>to</strong>mach, so far did <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> of my s<strong>to</strong>mach and my<br />

backbone stick <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />

Then th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g: ‘I will pass excrement or ur<strong>in</strong>e,’ I fell d<strong>own</strong> face<br />

forward right <strong>the</strong>re through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />

Then I rub<strong>be</strong>d this body and my limbs comfortably with my hand.<br />

Then as I rub<strong>be</strong>d my limbs with my hand, hair that was rotten at <strong>the</strong><br />

root fell out of my body through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />

* * *<br />

Now <strong>the</strong>re are some ascetics and brahm<strong>in</strong>s who say this, have this<br />

view: ‘There is purity through eat<strong>in</strong>g.’<br />

They say this: ‘We survive on chick-peas.’ They eat chick-pea, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

eat chick-pea powder, <strong>the</strong>y dr<strong>in</strong>k chick-pea juice: <strong>the</strong>y enjoy<br />

countless k<strong>in</strong>ds of chick-pea.<br />

But I recall surviv<strong>in</strong>g on just one chick-pea a day for food.<br />

It may occur <strong>to</strong> you: ‘At that time chick-pea was very large.’ But it<br />

should not <strong>be</strong> seen like that. At that time at <strong>the</strong> most <strong>the</strong> chick-pea<br />

was as it is nowadays.<br />

Because of only eat<strong>in</strong>g one chick-pea for food my body <strong>be</strong>came<br />

exceed<strong>in</strong>gly th<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Just like v<strong>in</strong>e knots or bamboo knots, so were my limbs both great<br />

and small through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />

Just like a camel’s foot, so did my but<strong>to</strong>cks <strong>be</strong>come through hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

so little food.<br />

Just like a twisted v<strong>in</strong>e, so did my backbone <strong>be</strong>come twisted through<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.
