37 Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Teach 14. The S<strong>to</strong>ry about Brahmā’s Request 23 Then this occurred <strong>to</strong> me: ‘This Dhamma I have atta<strong>in</strong>ed is deep, hard <strong>to</strong> see, hard <strong>to</strong> understand, peaceful, excellent, <strong>be</strong>yond <strong>the</strong> sphere of logic, profound, understandable only by <strong>the</strong> wise. But this generation delights <strong>in</strong> desire, is devoted <strong>to</strong> desire, gladdened by desire, and for this generation delight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> desire, devoted <strong>to</strong> desire, gladdened by desire, this th<strong>in</strong>g is hard <strong>to</strong> see, that is <strong>to</strong> say: conditionality and conditional orig<strong>in</strong>ation. This th<strong>in</strong>g also is hard <strong>to</strong> see, that is <strong>to</strong> say: <strong>the</strong> tranquilis<strong>in</strong>g of all processes, <strong>the</strong> lett<strong>in</strong>g go of all bases for cleav<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> end of crav<strong>in</strong>g, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna. But if I were <strong>to</strong> teach <strong>the</strong> Dhamma and o<strong>the</strong>rs did not understand me that would <strong>be</strong> tir<strong>in</strong>g for me, that would <strong>be</strong> troublesome <strong>to</strong> me.’ Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se truly wonderful verses occurred <strong>to</strong> me, that were unheard of <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past: ‘Now is it suitable for me <strong>to</strong> expla<strong>in</strong> what was atta<strong>in</strong>ed with difficulty? For those overcome by passion and hatred this Dhamma is not easily unders<strong>to</strong>od. Go<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> stream, it is profound, deep, hard <strong>to</strong> see, subtle. Those delight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> passion, obstructed by darkness, will not see it.’ Such was my reflection and my m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>action, not <strong>to</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Dhamma. Then <strong>to</strong> Brahmā Sahampati, know<strong>in</strong>g with his m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> reflection <strong>in</strong> my m<strong>in</strong>d, this thought occurred: ‘The world is surely go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> 23 V<strong>in</strong>.
