Austere Striv<strong>in</strong>g - 25<br />
I made my <strong>be</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> charnel ground, and recl<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> bones of<br />
corpses.<br />
After approach<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>the</strong> cowherders’ sons spat, ur<strong>in</strong>ated, threw<br />
mud, and pushed straws <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> my ears. But I do not recall an<br />
unwholesome thought aris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Such was my abid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> equanimity.<br />
9. Purity through Eat<strong>in</strong>g 18<br />
Now <strong>the</strong>re are some ascetics and brahm<strong>in</strong>s who say this, have this<br />
view: ‘There is purity through eat<strong>in</strong>g.’<br />
They say this: ‘We survive on red date.’ They eat red date, <strong>the</strong>y eat<br />
red date powder, <strong>the</strong>y dr<strong>in</strong>k red date juice: <strong>the</strong>y enjoy countless<br />
k<strong>in</strong>ds of red date.<br />
But I recall surviv<strong>in</strong>g on just one red date a day for food.<br />
It may occur <strong>to</strong> you: ‘At that time red date was very large.’ But it<br />
should not <strong>be</strong> seen like that. At that time at <strong>the</strong> most <strong>the</strong> red date was<br />
as it is nowadays.<br />
Because of only eat<strong>in</strong>g one red date for food my body <strong>be</strong>came<br />
exceed<strong>in</strong>gly th<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Just like v<strong>in</strong>e knots or bamboo knots, so were my limbs both great<br />
and small through hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />
Just like a camel’s foot, so did my but<strong>to</strong>cks <strong>be</strong>come through hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
so little food.<br />
Just like a twisted v<strong>in</strong>e, so did my backbone <strong>be</strong>come twisted through<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g so little food.<br />
