So how can you now, given <strong>to</strong> luxury, forsak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> striv<strong>in</strong>g, gone<br />
back <strong>to</strong> luxury, atta<strong>in</strong> a state <strong>be</strong>yond ord<strong>in</strong>ary human <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>gs, a<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction of what is truly noble knowledge and <strong>in</strong>sight?”<br />
For a second time I said this <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> group-of-five monks: “The<br />
Realised One, monks, is not given <strong>to</strong> luxury, is not forsak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
striv<strong>in</strong>g, and has not gone back <strong>to</strong> luxury, <strong>the</strong> Realised One, monks,<br />
is a Worthy One, a Perfect Sambuddha. Lend an ear, monks, I will<br />
<strong>in</strong>struct you about <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ment of <strong>the</strong> Deathless, I will teach <strong>the</strong><br />
Dhamma, and follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> path as it has <strong>be</strong>en preached, after no<br />
long time <strong>in</strong> regard <strong>to</strong> that good for which young men of good<br />
family rightly go forth from <strong>the</strong> home <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> homeless life, that<br />
unsurpassed conclusion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiritual life, you will dwell hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
kn<strong>own</strong>, experienced, and atta<strong>in</strong>ed it yourselves <strong>in</strong> this very life.”<br />
For a third time <strong>the</strong> group-of-five monks said this <strong>to</strong> me: “But you,<br />
friend Gotama, by that ascetic lifestyle, that practice, that difficult<br />
way of liv<strong>in</strong>g, did not atta<strong>in</strong> states <strong>be</strong>yond ord<strong>in</strong>ary human <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>gs, a<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction of what is truly noble knowledge and <strong>in</strong>sight.<br />
So how can you now, given <strong>to</strong> luxury, forsak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> striv<strong>in</strong>g, gone<br />

When this was said I said this <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> group-of-five monks: “Are you<br />
aware, monks, of my hav<strong>in</strong>g spoken <strong>to</strong> you like this <strong>be</strong>fore?”<br />
“Certa<strong>in</strong>ly not, reverend Sir.”<br />
“The Realised One, monks, is a Worthy One, a Perfect Sambuddha.<br />
Lend an ear, monks, I will <strong>in</strong>struct you about <strong>the</strong> atta<strong>in</strong>ment of <strong>the</strong><br />
