Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Teach - 39<br />
While look<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>the</strong> world with my <strong>Buddha</strong>-eye,<br />
I saw <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>gs hav<strong>in</strong>g little dust on <strong>the</strong> eyes,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g great dust on <strong>the</strong> eyes,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g sharp faculties,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g undeveloped faculties,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g good conditions,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g poor conditions,<br />
easy <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>struct,<br />
hard <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>struct,<br />
and only some who dwelt see<strong>in</strong>g danger <strong>in</strong> what is blameworthy and<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next world.<br />
Just as with water-lilies or lotuses or white lotuses some of those<br />
water-lilies or lotuses or white lotuses, born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water, flourish<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water, not ris<strong>in</strong>g above water, are nourished from <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong><br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g sharp faculties, hav<strong>in</strong>g undeveloped faculties, hav<strong>in</strong>g good<br />
conditions, hav<strong>in</strong>g poor conditions, easy <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>struct, hard <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>struct,<br />
and only some who dwelt see<strong>in</strong>g danger <strong>in</strong> what is blameworthy and<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next world.<br />
Then I recited this verse <strong>to</strong> Brahmā Sahampati:<br />
“Open for you are <strong>the</strong> doors <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deathless,<br />
whoever has ears let <strong>the</strong>m release <strong>the</strong>ir faith.<br />
Perceiv<strong>in</strong>g trouble, Brahmā, I did not speak amongst humans,<br />
about what was hard-learned, <strong>the</strong> excellent Dhamma!”<br />
Then Brahmā Sahampati, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g: ‘I have obta<strong>in</strong>ed consent for <strong>the</strong><br />
Gracious One <strong>to</strong> teach <strong>the</strong> Dhamma,’ after worshipp<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
circumambulat<strong>in</strong>g me, vanished right <strong>the</strong>re.
