I am a Worthy One <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, I am <strong>the</strong> Unsurpassed <strong>Teacher</strong>,<br />

I am <strong>the</strong> One Perfect Sambuddha, cool and passionless.<br />

I go <strong>to</strong> Kāsī’s city <strong>to</strong> set <strong>the</strong> Dhamma-Wheel roll<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

I will <strong>be</strong>at <strong>the</strong> drum of <strong>the</strong> Deathless <strong>in</strong> a world that is bl<strong>in</strong>d.”<br />

“It is as if you declare, friend, you are a Worthy One, an Inf<strong>in</strong>ite<br />

Vic<strong>to</strong>r!”<br />

“There are surely Vic<strong>to</strong>rs like me,<br />

who have atta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> destruction of <strong>the</strong> pollutants.<br />

I have <strong>be</strong>en vic<strong>to</strong>rious over all wicked th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, Upaka, I am a Vic<strong>to</strong>r.”<br />

When this was said <strong>the</strong> Absta<strong>in</strong>er Upaka, after say<strong>in</strong>g: “It may <strong>be</strong> so,<br />

friend,” shak<strong>in</strong>g his head, and tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wrong path, went away.<br />

17. The Meet<strong>in</strong>g at Isipatana 26<br />

Then while I was walk<strong>in</strong>g gradually on walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>ur, I approached<br />

Bārāṇasī, Isipatana, <strong>the</strong> Deer Park, and <strong>the</strong> group-of-five monks.<br />

The group-of-five monks saw me com<strong>in</strong>g from afar, and after see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

me, <strong>the</strong>y resolved among <strong>the</strong>mselves: “This Ascetic Gotama who is<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g, friends, is given <strong>to</strong> luxury, forsak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> striv<strong>in</strong>g he has<br />

gone back <strong>to</strong> luxury.<br />

He should certa<strong>in</strong>ly not <strong>be</strong> worshipped or s<strong>to</strong>od up for, nor should his<br />

bowl and ro<strong>be</strong> <strong>be</strong> taken, however, we can prepare a seat, if he wishes<br />

he will sit d<strong>own</strong>.”<br />

As I approached <strong>the</strong> group-of-five monks were unable <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>own</strong> agreement, and after com<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>to</strong> meet me, some<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok my bowl and ro<strong>be</strong>, some prepared <strong>the</strong> seat, some placed <strong>the</strong><br />

water for wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feet.<br />
