The Awaken<strong>in</strong>g - 34<br />

<strong>be</strong>autiful, ugly, <strong>in</strong> a good dest<strong>in</strong>y, <strong>in</strong> a bad dest<strong>in</strong>y, and I knew <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>gs<br />

arise accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir good and bad actions.<br />

This <strong>to</strong> me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle watch of <strong>the</strong> night, was <strong>the</strong> second<br />

knowledge I atta<strong>in</strong>ed, ignorance was abandoned, knowledge arose,<br />

darkness was abandoned, light arose, as I was liv<strong>in</strong>g heedful, ardent,<br />

and resolute <strong>in</strong> this way.<br />

Then with a m<strong>in</strong>d well-concentrated, and complete purity that comes<br />

from a cleansed m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g passionless, free of defilements,<br />

malleable, workable, steady, impertubable, I directed my m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>to</strong><br />

knowledge about <strong>the</strong> destruction of <strong>the</strong> pollutants.<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is suffer<strong>in</strong>g,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> aris<strong>in</strong>g of suffer<strong>in</strong>g,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> cessation of suffer<strong>in</strong>g,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> practice go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cessation of<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘These are pollutants,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> aris<strong>in</strong>g of pollutants,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> cessation of pollutants,’<br />

I knew, as it really is: ‘This is <strong>the</strong> practice go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cessation of<br />

pollutants.’<br />

Then know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this way, see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this way, my m<strong>in</strong>d was free<br />

from <strong>the</strong> pollutant of sensuality, my m<strong>in</strong>d was free from <strong>the</strong><br />

pollutant of crav<strong>in</strong>g for cont<strong>in</strong>ued existence, my m<strong>in</strong>d was free from<br />

<strong>the</strong> pollutant of ignorance.<br />

In freedom <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> knowledge: ‘This is freedom,’<br />

‘Destroyed is rebirth,<br />

accomplished is <strong>the</strong> spiritual life,<br />

done is what ought <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> done,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no more of this mundane state,’ this I knew.
