Canada<br />
Canada is the seventh largest consumer of crop<br />
nutrients worldwide and is the world’s largest exporter of<br />
potash. Nutrient consumption in 2014 was 2.4, 0.8 and<br />
0.4 million metric tonnes for nitrogen, phosphate and<br />
potash respectively. In 2014, crop protection product<br />
sales were $1.8 billion and seed sales were $1.1 billion.<br />
In total Canada has over 113 million acres of arable land;<br />
Western Canada has over 57 million acres of planted area,<br />
generating over 58 million metric tonnes of product. Top<br />
crops by production in Western Canada are wheat, canola,<br />
barley and peas.<br />
United States<br />
The United States has the third highest consumption of<br />
crop nutrients and is the world’s largest importer of crop<br />
nutrients. Nutrient consumption in 2014 was 12.2, 4.2<br />
and 4.5 million metric tonnes for nitrogen, phosphate and<br />
potash respectively. In 2014, crop protection product sales<br />
were $7.3 billion and seed sales were over $12.9 billion. The<br />
United States has over 383 million acres of arable land (as<br />
of 2012) with 91 million acres planted for corn, producing<br />
14.2 billion bushels in 2014.<br />
