Canada
Canada is the seventh largest consumer of crop
nutrients worldwide and is the world’s largest exporter of
potash. Nutrient consumption in 2014 was 2.4, 0.8 and
0.4 million metric tonnes for nitrogen, phosphate and
potash respectively. In 2014, crop protection product
sales were $1.8 billion and seed sales were $1.1 billion.
In total Canada has over 113 million acres of arable land;
Western Canada has over 57 million acres of planted area,
generating over 58 million metric tonnes of product. Top
crops by production in Western Canada are wheat, canola,
barley and peas.
United States
The United States has the third highest consumption of
crop nutrients and is the world’s largest importer of crop
nutrients. Nutrient consumption in 2014 was 12.2, 4.2
and 4.5 million metric tonnes for nitrogen, phosphate and
potash respectively. In 2014, crop protection product sales
were $7.3 billion and seed sales were over $12.9 billion. The
United States has over 383 million acres of arable land (as
of 2012) with 91 million acres planted for corn, producing
14.2 billion bushels in 2014.
