Among his other honors; Miller received the Institution of Mechanical Engineers;
Thomas Hawksley ; old Medal ;2010; and an American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics; Air ; reathing Propulsion ; est Paper Award ;200; ;.
After earning his bachelor;s degree in engineering
with first class honors in 1; ; ; and his master;s degree
in 1; ; 1; Dr. Hodson continued his education at the
- niversity of Cambridge; - .K.; and earned his Ph.D.
in turbomachinery in 1; ; ; . He continued to work at
Cambridge;s Whittle Laboratory; where he became a
professor of aerothermal technology in 2000 and director
in 2005. Hodson retired from the position of chair
of aerothermal technology in 2012.
His main interests have been in turbine aerodynamics
and heat transfer. His research included studies of
unsteady flow effects; laminar-turbulent transition in
low pressure turbines; the impact of real geometric features
on performance and the development of sensors
for gas turbines; and extended from laboratory-scale to
full-scale engines and often combined experimental and computational studies.
Hodson has published more than 100 ;ournal papers and holds several patents.
An ASME Fellow; Hodson has served as vice chair ;200; –05; and chair ;2005–0; ; of
ASME I; TI;s Turbomachinery Committee and recently served on the board of I; TI
;2011–15;. He was technical program chair; review co-chair; chair and conference chair
for Turbo Expo in 200; ; 2012; 201; and 201; ; respectively. He received ASME;s ; as
Turbine Award in 1; ; ; and Melville Medal in 1; ; ; ; and ; est Paper awards from I; TI;s
Heat Transfer Committee ;1; ; 5; 200; and 2011; and Turbomachinery Committee ;1; ; ; ;
200; and 2015;.
Hodson is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
