Dr. Chopra earned his bachelor;s degree in aeronautical
engineering from Pun;ab Engineering College
;Chandigarh; India; in 1; ; ; and his master;s degree in
aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of
Science; ; angalore; in 1; ; ; . He began doctoral studies
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ;MIT;;
Cambridge; in 1; ; ; and worked on dynamic analysis
of wind turbines. After earning his Sc.D. degree in aeronautics
and astronautics from MIT in 1; ; ; ; Chopra
;oined the NASA Ames; Stanford - niversity ;oint Institute
of Aeronautics and Acoustics ;Stanford; Calif.;;
where he worked for four and a half years on the development
of aeroelastic analysis and the testing of
advanced helicopter rotor systems in full-scale wind
tunnels.
In 1; ; 1 Chopra became a faculty member in the department of aerospace engineering
at the - niversity of Maryland; College Park; where he was promoted to full
professor in 1; ; ; ; served as department chairman ;1; ; ; –; 0; 200; –10; and was the
Minta-Martin research professor ;1; ; ; –2000;. He is currently the Alfred ; essow
professor in aerospace engineering; distinguished university professor and director of
the Alfred ; essow Rotorcraft Center.
Chopra has been working on various fundamental problems related to aeromechanics
of helicopters including aeroelastic stability; active vibration control; composite
blades; rotor head health monitoring; aeroelastic optimization; smart structures; micro
air vehicles and comprehensive aeromechanics analyses.
His direct graduate advising has resulted in ; 0 Ph.D. and ; 1 master;s degrees; and
his students now hold key positions in the rotorcraft industry; in academia and at
