In 2000 Cumpsty left the - niversity of Cambridge and re;oined Rolls-Royce in Derby<br />

where; as chief technologist; he contributed to all areas of the business. He retired from<br />

Rolls-Royce in 200; and became a professor at Imperial College London. Cumpsty has<br />

been emeritus professor since 200; . In addition to continuing to contribute to research<br />

at Imperial College London and the Whittle Laboratory; Cumpsty works with the<br />

Osney Thermo-; luids Laboratory at the - niversity of Oxford; - .K.; and the ; as<br />

Turbine Laboratory at MIT.<br />

pursuit of analytical reasoning and physical understanding of complicated<br />

machining processes. While many researchers in the field rely primarily on experimental<br />
