Dr. Castillo is the Don-Kay-Clay Cash distinguished<br />
engineering chair in wind energy at Texas Tech - niversity<br />
;TT- ;; Lubbock. He ;oined the mechanical engineering<br />
department at TT- as a strategic cluster hire in<br />
2011. In addition to the endowed chair position; Castillo<br />
was founding director of the National Wind Resource<br />
Center until 201; .<br />
; rom 1; ; ; to 2011 Castillo was a member of the<br />
faculty of the department of mechanical; aerospace and<br />
nuclear engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute<br />
;RPI; in Troy; N.1 .<br />
His research in turbulence; using experimental techniCues;<br />
direct numerical simulations and multiscale<br />
asymptotic analysis; has in;ected new ideas in turbulent<br />
boundary layers and the understanding of initial conditions<br />
on large scale turbulence; and wind energy.<br />
During 201; Castillo founded a Summer Research Institute on Renewable Energy<br />
; Medicine at TT- for underrepresented minority and female students in STEM<br />
;science; technology; engineering and mathematics; fields; and while at RPI he developed<br />
partnerships and programs funded by the National Science ; oundation ;NS; ;<br />
to attract and mentor underrepresented Ph.D. students in STEM fields.<br />
His other career efforts to increase the number of underrepresented students<br />
in STEM fields have included . isiting Scholar and . isiting ; aculty programs; the<br />
NS; -funded Alliance for ; raduate Education and the Professoriate; Central New<br />
1 ork–Puerto Rico; and the K-12 Teachers Research Experience. He has directly<br />
mentored ; ; 0 underrepresented students. In addition; Castillo has worked to increase<br />
recruitment and retention of minorities in academic positions through mentoring and<br />
professional development opportunities. Ten of his former graduate students are in<br />
academic positions in the - .S.<br />
Castillo has published more than 100 articles; co-edited four books; given nearly<br />
; 0 lectures; and given nearly ; 0 invited lectures ;- .S.; Europe; Latin America and<br />
Australia;. He has also delivered several keynote; distinguished and plenary lectures<br />
at ma;or academic institutions and scientific organizations around the world. He holds<br />
several patents on energy and medicine.<br />
An ASME ; ellow; Castillo has served on committees and as conference session chair<br />
for the ; luids Engineering Division ;; ED;. He received the Robert T. Knapp Award<br />
from the ; ED in 2002.<br />
