THE MA1 O D. HERSE1 AWARD; established in 1; ; ; ; is bestowed for distinguished
and continued contributions over a substantial period of time to the advancement of
the science and engineering of tribology. Distinguished contributions may result from
significant original research in one or more of the many scientific disciplines related
to lubrication.

Dr. Etsion earned his bachelor;s degree; master;s
degree and D.Sc. in aeronautical engineering from
Technion–Israel Institute of Technology; Haifa; in 1; ; ; ;
1; ; 1 and 1; ; ; ; respectively. After receiving his doctoral
degree he ;oined the faculty in Technion;s department
of mechanical engineering. Etsion has served in various
capacities; from professor to 1 eshayahu Winograd
chair in fluid mechanics and heat transfer; has held a
number of guest appointments; and has been head of
the Shamban Tribology Laboratory since 1; ; 1. Since
2010 he is professor emeritus.
In the early years of his academic career Etsion;s
research focused on fluid mechanics aspects of tribology.
He developed original solutions for gas bearings
and made pioneering contributions in the area of
mechanical seal dynamics. He then started to study solid mechanics aspects of tribology
and made some breakthrough contributions in modeling contact; adhesion; and
static friction of rough surfaces. In 1; ; ; Etsion invented laser surface texturing; which
is now recognized worldwide as a promising technology for energy conservation.
He also made original contributions in micro; nano tribology and in biotribology.
His current research focus is on modeling of coated rough surfaces with the aim of
optimizing coating thickness for best tribological performance.
Etsion has supervised more than ; 0 graduate students as well as scientists from the
former - SSR that immigrated to Israel; and he has collaborated with scientists from
many nations.
He is the author; co-author of more than 200 scientific archival publications ;h-index
of ; 1 as of ;uly 201; ; and the inventor; co-inventor on 1; patents.
An ASME Fellow; Etsion has served the Tribology Division as associate editor of
the !9!!nal 90 &!3,9l91C ;1; ; 0–; ; ;; member ;1; ; ; –2000; and secretary ;1; ; ; –2000; of the
Executive Committee; chair of the International Coordination Committee ;1; ; ; –; ; ;;
and member ;2000–0; ; and chair ;2002–0; ; of the Nomination and Oversight Committee.
He received the Tribology Division;s Innovative Research Award in 200; and
K.L. ;ohnson ; est Paper Award in 200; .
Etsion is also a Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers
;STLE; and a member of the Israel Society for Tribology.
